Bio

Dr. Angie Smith is a Teaching Professor in the College of Education at North Carolina State University, where she has taught and mentored students for sixteen years. A Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor‑Supervisor, National Certified Counselor, executive coach, and organizational development practitioner, she brings more than two decades of experience across higher education, counseling, and human resources. Before joining NC State, Dr. Smith held HR roles at the Mayo Clinic, IBM, Cummins Engine Company, Duke University, and Wake Medical Center, experiences that shaped her commitment to mental health, leadership development, wellness, and career readiness.

Dr. Smith’s research interests include college counseling, career development, online learning, wellness, and clinical supervision, with a focus on helping emerging adults and counselors-in-training grow with clarity, confidence, and purpose. She has authored and co-authored multiple publications, including An Innovative Approach to Career Counseling (2023), 15-Minute Focus: Digital Citizenship with the National Center for Youth Issues, Inc. (2023), Developing Online Learning in the Helping Professions (2018), and has contributed numerous articles to NCDA’s Career Convergence magazine.

In 2026, she began a three‑year term as a Trustee with the National Board of Certified Counselors Foundation (NBCCF), continuing her long-standing dedication to advancing the counseling profession. Her work has been recognized through the Roy N. Anderson Award for outstanding contributions to the career field, the NC State Alumni Outstanding Teaching Award, and the NC State University Outstanding Teacher Award. She has also served as President of the North Carolina Career Development Association and on the Editorial Review Board for the Journal of Employment Counseling, Journal of First-Generation Student Success, and Adult Education Quarterly.

Dr. Smith is known for her relational, strengths‑based approach to teaching, mentorship, and leadership.
