American Education Week 2017

The NC State College of Education will hold over a dozen events the week of Nov. 13-17 to celebrate American Education Week. See the schedule of activities below.
Monday, Nov. 13
METRC Grand Opening Expo
Time: 9 a.m.-6 p.m.
Location: METRC
Description: As part of American Education Week, celebrate our revitalized space, meet our new team and make your mark in METRC as we step forward into the next 90 years of the College of Education at NC State University!
- Scavenger Hunt → All Day → Join us for a Goose Chase around METRC discovering resources and marking the ways we can impact your experiences at the College of Education. The scavenger hunt will run for all of American Education Week and prizes will be announced on Friday, November 17
- Coffee and Conversations → 9-11 a.m. → Join the METRC team and faculty and staff from the College of Education to discuss books that made a mark on their growth and development as educators and readers. Coffee and light breakfast snacks will be available and you can enter your name for a prize drawing which will be held at the end of the day!
- Popcorn and Puzzles → Noon-2 p.m. → Can you solve a maker challenge? Can you get a hole in one with a robot? Can you …. breakout? Try out new technologies and challenge-based learning ideas with METRC resources that can make a mark on student learning. Popcorn and lemonade will be available and you can enter your name for a prize drawing which will be held at the end of the day!
- Meet the New METRC Reception → 4:30-6 p.m. → Drop in to explore METRC resources, meet our team members and enjoy appetizers and a mocktail. Be sure to enter your name in the prize drawing that will be held at 6:00.
- Prize Information: If you attend all events in METRC on November 13, you can enter your name in our drawing at each event. At Coffee and Conversations, you will be able to enter the drawing at each “conversation” station. At Puzzles and Popcorn, you will be able to enter the drawing after each puzzle/challenge that you solve.
- American Education Week: Libraries are vital to American education and throughout the week we will display books that made a mark on our College of Education Faculty and Staff, continue with the scavenger hunt begun on November 13 and share famous quotations and data about the impact of digital learning and future-ready school libraries.
Passport to Success Thank an Educator

Description: Please join the Passport to Success Program to make thank you cards for the educators in the College of Education who have made a significant impact on your college career and within your life. Passport members will hand deliver each card to their respective departments. Let’s give thanks to those professors, administrators, and support professionals who have made the College of Education a great place to be!
Developing World-Class Student Leaders through a University-School Partnership
Time: 3 p.m.-4 p.m.
Location: The Friday Institute, BB&T Room
Who: Hiller Spires (CED professor), David Schwenker (Wake STEM principal), Andrea Gambino (Wake STEM teacher), and Rajan Farmah, Dhara Patel, Nathan Ress, and Kyanah Hughes (Wake STEM students)
Description: We will introduce the design and activities of the ongoing partnership among NC State University, Wake STEM Early College High School and Suzhou North America High School. Emphasis will be placed on the evolution of the partnership, impact of cross-cultural collaborations on student development and leadership, and overcoming challenges inherent with complex, educational partnerships.
The Power of Your Pencil
Time: 5-7 p.m.
Location: Poe South Atrium

Description: Kick off American Education Week with a Silent Auction and Raffle benefiting Pencils of Promise at NC State. The money raised from this event will be donated to Pencils of Promise to help build schools and provide clean water for children in developing countries. There will also be a short presentation about the organization and refreshments for your enjoyment!
Tuesday, Nov. 14
MYEN Sub-Stop Fundraiser
Time: 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Who: Multicultural Young Educators Network (MYEN)
Description: MYEN will be making sub sandwiches for a fundraiser. All are welcome to purchase lunch to help support our organization.
Meet My Future: Bridging the Opportunity Gap in Rural Areas
Time: 4:30-5:30 p.m.
Location: Park Shops 200
Who: Ashley Lawson
Description: Students in rural areas face unique challenges such as lack of access to opportunity. Ashley will share her own experiences as a rural student, her experiences working as a teacher in rural areas, and her experiences implementing a program, Meet My Future, designed to meet the needs of rural students and rural communities through career development.
Social Justice in Our Communities Symposium
Time: 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m.
Location: Kamphoefner Hall | Room 00G20
Description: The Social Justice in our Communities Symposium is an event that provides students with the opportunity to engage in critical conversations centered around the themes from this year’s NC State common read, Between the World and Me: Inspired by the common read, the College of Education desires to examine issues of injustice and inequities and the impact social issues have on communities, particularly for people of color and youth of color in our schools. At the symposium, attendees will engage in a panel discussion with local community leaders, faculty members, and administrators who will share their professional experiences and discuss how students can take action to advocate against injustices that occur in our society.
Share Why You Chose Education
Description: Create your own 15- to 45-second video in which you share why you chose education for a chance to win $1,000. Just post your video on social media with the hashtag #WhyIChoseEducation. Or, email us an MP4 file. Faculty and staff will vote on their favorite video, and we will award prizes to the top three vote getters:
- 1st Place: $1,000 gift card to NCSU Bookstores
- 2nd Place: $250 gift card to NCSU Bookstores
- 3rd Place: $50 gift card to NCSU Bookstores
All entries must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14. Only NC State College of Education students are eligible.
Wednesday, Nov. 15
NCCTM Coffee & Doughnuts

Who: NC Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCCTM)
Description: NCCTM will be selling doughnuts for $1 and coffee by donation to fundraise for local teachers.
TIP Teaching Scholars Program: Exciting Educational Opportunities in Rural Counties
Time: 5 -6:30 p.m.
Location: Poe 120
Description: The NC State College of Education and The Innovation Project (TIP) have established a partnership to provide a $10,000 financial award to at least 10 juniors who teach for at least two years after graduation in one of five public school districts facing teaching shortages. Meet with participating district leaders and learn more about this unique opportunity to give back to deserving communities.

Education Researchers and the Office of Technology Commercialization and New Ventures: How to Partner
Time: 3-4:15 p.m.

Description: Have a great idea for translating your scholarship into a product or a business that can reach broader audiences, but not sure how to go about moving it forward? The Office of Technology Commercialization and New Ventures will provide an overview of their services and provide examples of data, software and copyrightable works that have been brought to the market by NC State faculty. Specific cases from education and social sciences will be discussed.
A Small Act: Film and Discussion
Time: 6-8 p.m.

Who: Fumi Agboola & the CSLEPS Leaders for Change Program
Description: Join us for a documentary screening of the film “A Small Act” followed by a group discussion. The documentary is about a woman, Hilde Back, who donated money for a Kenyan boy, Chris Mburu, to finish secondary school. Chris grew up and attended Harvard Law School and became a human rights activist for the United Nation. To give back to his village, he started a nonprofit organization after Hilde Back and is helping fund top students’ school fees for secondary school. This remarkable film shows how one kind gesture can have a ripple effect in the world. This program is worth 1 PGU Credit (PD 542).

Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools

Who: Angela Gay, Women’s Center; Andy DeRoin, GLBT Center; Whitney McCoy, Doctoral Student
Description: The Women’s Center in partnership with the GLBT Center and the College of Education will facilitate a discussion on the book, Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools, by Monique Morris. The book is a call to action around the inequalities of Black girls within K-12 education. Describing the real experiences of Black girls Morris describes the school to confinement pipeline, exposing the high risk situations which affect the life trajectory of Black girls after being pushed out of school; setting them on the path to incarceration as well as physical and economic insecurity. From a critical race theory perspective, we will provide an overview of the book and facilitate a discussion of what we can do as educators, counselors, and higher education professionals to alleviate the pushout of Black girls in education.
