2019 Dallas Herring Lecture

December 3, 2019 | 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

The NC State College of Education’s Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research honors the legacy of Dallas Herring, a pillar of the North Carolina Community College System by hosting the 2019 Dallas Herring Lecture. Join us as we listen to Dr. Sanford “Sandy” Shugart, who has served since 2000 as the fourth president of Valencia College in greater Orlando, Fla.

As a winner of the first Aspen Prize for Excellence, Valencia is one of the most celebrated community colleges in America. Serving around 70,000 students per year, Valencia is known for high rates of graduation, transfer, and job placement and has become a national exemplar for best practices in learning-centered education. Prior to Valencia, Sandy served as president of North Harris College and as vice president and chief academic officer of the North Carolina Community College System. He earned his Ph.D. in Teaching and Learning from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In addition to his career in education, Dr. Shugart is a published poet, songwriter, and author.

Dr. Lisa Chapman, president of Central Carolina Community College, will deliver the response to Dr. Shugart’s lecture. Awards will be presented to current students and alumni to acknowledge exemplary achievements and contributions to North Carolina’s community colleges. A reception will follow.
