PD 375 – Exploring AI Search Tools to Enhance Learning in the Elementary Science Classroom
February 27 | 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm
This session will provide pre-service elementary teachers with a culturally relevant science activity for a 4th or 5th grade classroom that incorporates AI-search tools. The purpose is to build elementary teachers’ knowledge about AI and how AI-powered searches work so that they can support their students’ use of tools in the classroom for learning. We will explore teachers’ prior knowledge about AI, introduce information to expand their knowledge for how AI-searches work, and provide hands-on activities with example tools. The participants will engage with the tools and a standards-based lesson plan that explores how media shapes our ideas about who is a scientist and how AI can reinforce and perpetuate these biases. Participants will be provided with the lesson plan and associated materials, which they can incorporate in their classrooms to provide their students with an opportunity to use AI while learning about more diverse historical and contemporary STEM professionals.
