Program Description
The Reading Education concentration in the Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum M.Ed. program helps experienced teachers strengthen their impact in literacy. Through coursework and hands-on experience in an innovative, fully online cohort-based program, teachers collaborate to learn about the science of reading and to identify evidence-based solutions to the barriers that affect children’s literacy learning.
This concentration is designed to meet the needs of full-time educators with fully online courses scheduled for the evening hours. Cohort members take two courses (6 hours) per semester for five semesters (fall, spring, summer, fall, spring, summer), completing the program in two academic years. While this concentration primarily draws interest from elementary educators, the content is also applicable for middle and high school teachers who want to expand their knowledge of foundational literacy development, assessment, and intervention.
Admissions Requirements
Applicants for this concentration must meet the following qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree in a relevant area with a minimum GPA of 3.0
- NC teacher license or equivalent experience in a relevant area/grade level
- Three or more years of relevant teaching experience (preferred but not required)
Applicants should also consult the general requirements of The Graduate School at NC State.
To apply, you will need to submit transcripts from all universities previously attended, a personal statement (approximately 500-800 words), a current resume, and three letters of recommendation. We do not require GRE scores or entrance exams for this concentration. In your personal statement, describe your professional interests and experiences that prepare you for a graduate degree in the concentration area.
Please note that the TLC M.Ed. is not an educator preparation program, and it does not lead to a teaching license for beginning teachers. The M.Ed. degree provides specialized knowledge for experienced teachers who already have completed their teacher licensure requirements. If you already have a NC teacher license, you can elect to add the Special Subjects (K-12) license in Reading by passing the Praxis graduate-level reading specialist exam after completing this program. If you are looking for a program that prepares new teachers for licensure in NC, check out our online M.A.T. program.
The Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum program was formerly named Curriculum & Instruction. The name change is still pending in the application system. When applying, select Curriculum & Instruction as the program name, and then select the appropriate concentration area
