NC Teach Language Arts (6-9)
NC TEACH helps professionals clear their Residency License. All candidates must be teaching before starting the program.
NC TEACH classes are online and one Saturday per month. The affordable program is part-time and consists of 6 education classes or 18 credits completed in 3 semesters that can be started in either Spring or Summer.
Eligibility
In order to be eligible to teach English (9-12) or Language Arts (6-9) on a Residency License and be eligible for NC TEACH, you will need:
- A Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited
college or university with at least a 2.70 minimum GPA - At least 24 hours in English, Literature, Writing, Composition, Language, Grammar, or Rhetoric (see bottom of page for a note regarding non-relevant courses)
- One of the following to meet the initial eligibility “content” criteria:
- A “relevant” degree in subject area, or
- 24 hours in subject area, or
- Passing Praxis II scores on the appropriate exam
NOTE: These are requirements for initial eligibility and to quality for a Residency License. In order to obtain full licensure, candidates must have 24 hours in addition to the Praxis II before applying for licensure.
Specialty Requirements
The following breakdown of English courses is required when NC TEACHers apply for full licensure at the end of the program:
- 3 courses in Composition, Writing, or Grammar
- 3 courses in literature
- 1 course in the literature of a specific Author, or Genre
- 1 course of an additional English elective
If you do not have these courses completed when entering NC TEACH, you can plan to take these content courses during the NC TEACH program. You must have a “C” or higher in the course. “C-” is not accepted.
Non Relevant Courses
Courses from these departments do not count toward the content course work for an English (9-12) or Language Arts (6-9) license:
- Journalism
- Drama
- Communications
- Film
- Public Speaking

Praxis II
All candidates must pass the Praxis II before applying for full licensure. This exam can be taken while enrolled in NC TEACH.
