Master of arts in teaching
The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program is an accelerated teacher licensure program that leads its completers to both an initial teaching license and a Master’s degree in just a year and a half (full time). The MAT also leads completers to the 10% pay increase upon hire in one of North Carolina’s public/charter schools. With the MAT, we expand our knowledge and impact, and we also continue to support teachers’ need to integrate practice with theory as well as to experience today’s culturally diverse and technology-enhanced classrooms.
The MAT provides an outstanding program at a reasonable cost. For many of our classes, we are able to offer half the normal graduate tuition. You can expect each 3 credit hour class to cost approximately $680 as compared to well over $1200 at other MAT institutions. We accomplish this by partnering with local school systems and holding classes in their facilities. This not only reduces the cost, but also increases our ability to model best practices in teaching in relevant environments.
The content areas being served by the MAT are secondary Math, Science, Social Studies, and English; Middle Grades (Language Arts or Social Studies); Technology Education, Special Education and Elementary Education.
Participants can undertake this program full-time or part-time. Depending on the content area, the program is approximately 33 credit hours, include student teaching.
NOTE: If you do not have the 24 content area credits needed to be accepted into the program, you can still take the first two graduate classes as a post baccalaureate student (PBS) and transfer them into the program once you have taken the full 24 content specific hours and are accepted.
Please note that not all Distance Education programs are on-line. The MAT program at North Carolina State University follows a hybrid model, including classes that are on-line, face-to-face off campus, and face-to-face on campus. Please pay close attention to the method of delivery for each of our programs/classes.
