NSF EDU Core Research (ECR:Core)

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Directorate for STEM Education is inviting proposals for its flagship EDU Core Research (ECR:Core) program. This program emphasizes fundamental research that generates foundational knowledge in STEM education, supporting projects across three distinct funding tiers depending on project scope and maturity.

Program Overview

The ECR:Core program funds basic research on fundamental questions in STEM learning, STEM learning environments, broadening participation in STEM, and STEM workforce development.

  • Sponsoring Agency: National Science Foundation (NSF)
  • Target Audience: Researchers in STEM education, cognitive science, learning sciences, educational psychology, and related disciplines.
  • Funding Levels & Tiers:
    • Level I: Up to $500,000 (maximum 3 years)
    • Level II: Up to $1,500,000 (3 to 5 years)
    • Level III: Up to $2,500,000 (3 to 5 years)

Key Deadlines

  • CED Internal Deadline: September 24, 2026 (for internal review, budget preparation, and routing)
  • Sponsor Application Deadline: October 1, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. local time (First Thursday in October, annually thereafter)

Scope & Focus Areas

Proposals should contribute to foundational knowledge in one or more of the following core areas:

  • STEM Learning & Learning Environments: Mechanisms underlying STEM learning in formal higher education contexts.
  • Broadening Participation in STEM: Interventions, pathways, and structural factors that foster equity and access.
  • STEM Workforce Development: Education and training strategies for postsecondary students and the modern STEM workforce.

Important Program Update: For the October 1, 2026 deadline, the ECR:Core competition specifically focuses on fundamental research in undergraduate education, graduate education, higher education, and the STEM workforce. (Proposals focused on K-12 or early childhood levels should align with the NSF STEM K-12 solicitation).
