David English

Teaching Professor

Bio

David English serves as Teaching Professor of Higher Education in the Department of Educational Leadership, Policy and Human Development, where he has taught classes on higher education policy, organizational theory, finance, and history. David is interested in the role and function of higher education in American society, with a focus on policy, management, student access, and success. David also currently serves as Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs for the University of North Carolina System, where as Chief Academic Officer he advises the UNC System President and the Board of Governors on academic affairs and leads in the development and implementation of the academic mission of the University, which is to discover, create, transmit, and apply knowledge to address the needs of individuals and society. English previously served as Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where he is also a Professor in the Division of Liberal Arts, having taught courses on the economics of higher education, college access, democracy and education, and sociology. He also worked in admissions and college access earlier in his career, including as Director of the state-wide college access program CFNC.org.

David was a member of Leadership North Carolina Class XXI, ElevateNC: Higher Education Policy 2021-2022, was selected as the Appalachian State University Young Alumni Award Recipient in 2018, and the North Carolina State University Distinguished Alumni Award for the Higher Education program in 2019. He currently serves on the North Carolina Education and Workforce Innovation Commission,  and previously served on the North Carolina Transfer Advisory Committee and the North Carolina ACT Council.
