Whether you are an entering or experienced training professional, our program will expose you to both fundamental foundations and innovative best practices, technologies and tools so you’re prepared to work in internal or external training positions in the sector of your choice.  You will learn about beginning and intermediate instructional design; talent development; assessment and evaluation; training and task analysis; the use of technology in training and instructional design; adult learning; and, organizational change.

The online Training & Development M.Ed. is designed to prepare professionals for business and industry, higher education, healthcare, and military, who are interested in instructional design, corporate training, program evaluation and assessment related to training, organizational change, talent development, consulting, or coaching.

Program Description

The program curriculum is designed in consultation with a professional Advisory Board with industry leaders, and allows graduates to prepare for promotional opportunities, starting or making a career change, or to offer transition opportunities for veterans who are separating from service.

Students and Graduates will:

  • Develop competencies in instructional design, evaluation and assessment of training programs, adult learning, incorporating technology in training, organizational change, and DEI.
  • Have opportunities for professional networking, professional conference participation, presentation or publication, Graduate Student Association, faculty and student interaction
  • Have opportunities for work-based, realistic assignment projects that can be added to portfolios/work samples
  • Prepare for the Training Industry, Inc. and American Talent Development (ATD) certification exams

Delivery

The T&D courses are 100% online using Moodle as a learning management system (LMS). The courses are asynchronous, with opportunities for optional zoom interaction, discussion forums, projects, and a mix of assignments and technologies.  The teaching design is geared towards adult learners – from the format to the readings, to the focus on realistic practice, and incorporating your prior educational, professional and life experiences into the learning context.

  • Students may apply at any time year-round, Fall, Spring and Summer. Applications are evaluated monthly for the upcoming semester/s start dates.
  • Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree form an accredited institution of higher education. A wide variety of fields are encouraged.
  • Materials include a completed online application, department application form, transcripts, resume, personal statement and non-refundable application fee.
  • Unofficial transcripts are to be uploaded into Apply Yourself. If admitted, official transcripts must be sent to the Graduate School before admission is confirmed.
  • The Personal Statement should briefly discuss your background, aspirations and interest in the field of Training & Development.
  • Complete the North Carolina residency form if claiming for tuition purposes.
  • TOEFL or IELTS scores are required for international students.
  • Three Letters of Recommendation are required.

GRE scores are not required for application to this degree

* Applicants currently attending or who have previously attended NC State are not required to provide an NC State transcript. Official transcripts will be required once an admission decision has been made by the Graduate School.
