PD 678 – Fiscal Fitness for New Teachers

March 13, 2018 | 5:15 pm - 6:45 pm

A two-part workshop on fiscal literacy that lasts 1.5 hrs.

1. The first part of the workshop focuses on helping pre-service teachers think about financial planning and avoid costly mistakes of many new grads entering the workforce. Key themes are:

Warm-up: Understanding Your Net Income
Cardiovascular Workout: Expenditures & Budgeting
Strength Building Exercises: Adjusting for Your Fabulous Lifestyle
Flexibility: Trimming Expenses to Maintain Your Bottom Line
Cool-down: Planning for the Future

Students review a real paycheck and closely examine deductions as well as discuss budget planning and worksheets. Additionally, students are provided a handout that (a) lists ideas for making additional income or reducing taxes and (b) details resources that provide cost-savings for teachers (e.g., retailer discounts for teachers and The Good Neighbor Next Door Program, and student loan deferment programs). We also briefly review key concepts related to retirement.

2. The second part of the workshop highlights resources that help teachers integrate financial education into the school curriculum (e.g., Money As You Grow, Money as You Learn, My Classroom Economy, and The Secret Millionaires Club, and financial game simulations).
