PD 6775 – Building Bridges: A Path to Stringer Communities in Education

November 15, 2023 | 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

It is important for teachers to understand that they play a vital role in shaping the lives of their students. While teaching in the classroom is essential, it is equally important to recognize the significance of community involvement in education. By building bridges between the classroom and the community, teachers can provide their students with a more holistic educational experience.

During the Building Bridges event, our pre-service teachers have the opportunity to learn about the various community organizations and stakeholders in education. By understanding the work that these organizations do and the impact they have on students, teachers can identify ways to incorporate their resources and expertise into their teaching.

Through this event, we hope to generate discussions on how teachers can become more involved in their communities and become a resource for their students outside of the classroom. We believe that by fostering strong relationships between teachers and community organizations, we can create a more supportive and inclusive learning environment for our future students.

SURE Interns
Students who participated in the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) during Summer 2023 will present their research findings in a poster session gallery at the beginning of this event. SURE Interns participated in a competitive 5-week summer transformational experience to support Tier 1 and Tier 2 eastern rural NC counties.

Participants experienced an intensive one-day research seminar and then used their research skills to design their own internship experience. This internship allowed students to gain hands-on experience with school district leaders and educators, community leaders, and nonprofit organizations that focus on educational attainment, equity, social justice, and student success.
