PD 889 – The Imagination Gap: Black Girl Magic and Representation in YA Literature

March 31, 2021 | 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

From Harry Potter to The Hunger Games, YA books are playgrounds for our imaginations that provide a space for creativity, culture, and the privilege to dream of experiences that challenge even our wildest dreams. However, when the same literature that liberates White imaginations, places boundaries of sexism, racism, and intersectional violence on Black girl imaginations, what role should Young Adult literature play in opening the passions, curiosities, and desire for the permission to imagine? Join us for a night of discussion and action, as well as adventure and excitement, as we explore the answer to this question through Dr. Ebony Elizabeth Thomas’ discussion with Marc Anthony on The Left of Black podcast and our own experiences. We as youth advocates have the responsibility to build spaces for Black girls to imagine, and that starts by giving them books that allow them to.
