CANCELED: PD 6625 – New Literacies Collaborative (NLC) Spring 2020 Symposium Workshop

March 31, 2020 | 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Canceled

Apprenticing English Learners in American schools to simultaneously develop conceptual, analytic, and language practices

Aída Walqui, co-director of WestEd’s Quality Teaching for English Learners (QTEL) will lead this workshop

During this workshop participants will learn, experience, and reflect on a pedagogy that challenges and supports English Learners -and all other students- as they apprentice into academic practice. Based on sociocultural/ecological theories, it proposes that teaching is the promotion of learning, where teachers deliberately craft invitations for students to engage in powerful and generative activities, to talk with peers, read, write, critique ideas with each other around compelling academic themes and arrive at their own reasoned decisions. The workshop will use deliberate and contingent scaffolding to explore how to design and enact these engagements. It will also use classroom video clips to create a common vision of quality education for English Learners and all other students.
