Professor Jessica Hunt Elected to US Math Recovery Council Board of Directors

Jessica Hunt, a professor of mathematics education and special education in NC State’s College of Education, has been elected to the US Math Recovery Council Board of Directors.

The US Math Recovery Council empowers educators to advance students’ mathematical thinking and success, and transforms numeracy education through customized and unique professional learning with meaningful assessment and instruction.

Hunt will serve a three-year term on the board, beginning June 1.

“It is a great honor to be elected to the Board of Directors for the US Math Recovery Council!  I’m very excited to begin this work with a dedicated and thoughtful group of leaders,” she said.

Hunt’s research focuses on helping students with learning differences and disabilities succeed in mathematics and has recently focused on building asset-based learning environments. Her current National Science Foundation-sponsored project has enabled the development of the award-winning Dream2B game and accompanying Model Mathematics Education (ModelME) curriculum to help students better understand fractions through scenarios rooted in real-life STEM careers.

As part of the US Math Recovery Center Board, Hunt said she hopes to build on the organization’s already impactful work to help promote access and opportunity for all students in mathematics.

“I hope to position teachers as change agents who use math instruction to listen for, center and build upon students’ mathematical assets as a function of instructional design,” Hunt said.
