Doctoral Student Ashley Mackey-Whitworth Named Recipient of 2023 Edgar J. and Ethel B. Boone Adult & Community College Education Award

Ashley Mackey-Whitworth, a doctoral student in the NC State College of Education’s community college leadership program, has been named the recipient of the 2023 Edgar J. and Ethel B. Boone Adult & Community College Education Award.

The award is designed to support doctoral students in the NC State College of Education who are seeking a degree in community college leadership.

Mackey-Whitworth is currently a career and college promise coach at Guilford Technical Community College, where she steers committees, serves as a liaison for high school administrators and community leaders, and works directly with students as a mentor and academic coach.

She decided to pursue a doctoral degree in the NC State College of Education with the goal of growing her leadership skills to enhance student services.

“I chose this program because of its reputation for creating quality leaders in education,” Mackey-Whitworth said. “Having the opportunity to receive executive mentorship from current community college leaders makes this program unique.”

Mackey-Whitworth is completing her degree online and has developed a close relationship with other students in the program.

“I have learned that we are all in this together, and I appreciate that my instructors display this action,” Mackey-Whitworth said. “Having various skill sets, knowledge and backgrounds provides the ultimate experience. Whether we are learning from one another or from our instructors, together as a Pack we can be successful.”
