Jakara Scurry Receives 2024 National Board for Certified Counselors Foundation’s Minority Fellowship for Mental Health Counselors
Jakara Scurry, a student in the Ph.D. Educational Leadership, Policy, and Human Development counseling and counselor education concentration, has been selected by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) Foundation for a 2024 NBCC Minority Fellowship for Mental Health Counselors.
The program is designed to provide financial support to master’s- and doctoral-level counseling students and recognize their commitment to historically underserved communities.
“Being selected as a doctoral fellow for the 2024 NBCC Minority Fellowship for Mental Health Counselors means everything to me,” Scurry said. “Not only does it provide me with a great sense of accomplishment as an African American and American Indian woman, but the fellowship will help me fulfil my purpose, which is to improve access to quality mental health and substance use treatment for underserved populations.”
This is the second time Scurry has been named an NBCC fellow — while earning her master’s degree, she received the 2020 NBCC Minority Fellowship for Addiction Counselors — so to be chosen again, she said, is particularly validating.
“It really warms my heart knowing that the NBCC Foundation believes in my abilities,” Scurry said. “I am beyond grateful for this opportunity, and it is one that I will not take for granted.”
