Tylan Deams: ‘The More I Learn and Get Involved in the Field of Education, the More I Fall in Love’

Since arriving at the NC State College of Education, science education major and Teaching Fellow Tylan Deams has taken advantage of multiple opportunities to get involved in the classroom, which have allowed her to grow as an educator.

This past summer, she also served as an orientation leader, a role in which she helped create a sense of community and belonging for incoming students, hopefully making their transition to NC State just a little bit easier.

Teaching Fellows receive up to $10,000 per year in forgivable loans to teach science, technology, engineering, mathematics, elementary or special education and engage in numerous opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Get to know Tylan:

Most Meaningful Moment So Far: Getting to work with students throughout my observations. I enjoy helping students through their coursework and learning more about them and their talents and skills.

My Favorite Experience So Far: Taking the [USC 110 Freshman Advancement Seminar]. It has provided me with so much perspective on the experiences of students [from diverse backgrounds] within NC State and how they navigate their identity within the classroom.

What I’ve Learned About What It Means To Be an Educator So Far: It comes with a great deal of responsibility. Not just because we are handling a room full of students, but because being responsible for how you advocate for yourself, or self-reflecting after each lesson and evaluating some of the strengths and weaknesses, are also extremely important when navigating a classroom space. Additionally, having that skill set is what propels us further while being an educator.

Why I Still Want To Be An Educator: The more I learn and get involved in the field of education, the more I fall in love. I love being in the classroom, and I love learning new things about how to further engage students and all the things in between. I have always wanted to pursue a career that makes me feel happy and excited to be there, and I have found it in teaching.

Why I Love the College of Education:

I love that the College of Education is always looking for more ways to reach out to their students and always creating opportunities for us to learn and grow from one another. There are so many events that are purely based on meeting one another because the College of Education truly understands the strength that is gained from building community.
