This past academic year, faculty, staff and research associates at the NC State College of Education, including research associates at the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation and the Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research, set a record for the total dollar amount of grants awarded: $30,485,332. This marks the third consecutive year that faculty have set a record for grant funding from external sources in a single year.
Examples of Grants
$6 million, four-year grant from the U.S. Department of Labor established the Artificial Intelligence Academy to support 5,000 workers with training, college coursework and certification to work in the field of artificial intelligence through public-private apprenticeships.
$3.75 million, five-year grant expanded delivery of the customized, two-year Master of School Administration program to train school leaders in partnership with public schools in North Carolina.
$2.9 million, four-year grant from the NSF facilitated the creation of free online resources for professional development in the teaching of statistics and data science, to help educators in grades 6-12 prepare data-literate students.
$1.4 million, four-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education will facilitate the development of a new small-group intervention for English learners in grades 3 through 5 who have reading comprehension difficulties.

Our faculty continue to engage in scholarly activity that advance knowledge about educational issues and drive solutions to pressing educational problems through books and journal articles, many of which have been honored with awards.
Publication Highlights
Professor Carla Johnson, Ph.D., edited The Handbook of Research on STEM Education, a collection of the most relevant and imperative topics permeating STEM Education around the world that is intended to serve as an anchor of current knowledge in the field and to inform future advances in STEM. Professors Meg Blanchard, Ph.D., Eric Wiebe, Ph.D., and Soonhye Park, Ph.D. all contribute to chapters within the book. Routledge published the book in May 2020.
Assistant Professor Crystal Chen Lee, Ed.D., Assistant Professor Michelle Falter, Ph.D., and doctoral student Nina Schoonover ‘21PHD, authored Encountering the Affective in Latino Immigrant Youth Narratives, which demonstrates the importance of attending to the affective dimensions of everyday life for Latinx immigrant youth through a post-qualitative research inquiry that animates lifeworlds of seven Latinx immigrant youth living in North Carolina. The authors argue that the narratives of these first-generation immigrants expose the effect that embodied memories have on present‐day experiences. It was published in Reading Research Quarterly in June 2020.
Assistant Professor Anna Egalite, Ph.D., was the lead author of Competitive Impacts of Means-Tested Vouchers on Public School Performance: Evidence from Louisiana, which examined the competitive impacts of the Louisiana Scholarship Program to determine its achievement impacts on students in affected public schools. The analysis found small positive impacts and the paper discusses the policy implications of these results. The articles was published in Education Finance and Policy in summer 2020.
