Meet Kevin Sutton ’12, ’18 EDD: I Want Students to Learn Much More Than Content

“I strive to show students a passion for excellence, a desire to learn, and how to cultivate a positive community and work team.”

This is part of a series of profiles of faculty who joined the NC State College of Education in 2018-19.

Why I Chose NC State College of Education: I came to the NC State College of Education in 2008 because of the exciting, hands-on learning and graphics communication program. The faculty treated me like family and pushed me to exceed my goals. This experience motivated me to continue my education so that I would be able to do the same thing for many more students.

Why I Pursued an Ed.D.: Learning is a lifelong process and higher education provided an avenue that gave me a chance to study and conduct research to improve student learning. The value of the degree is in the process you learn along the way. For me, the degree was a personal challenge where the diligent work brought a great sense of personal accomplishment.

My Research Interests: I find most data exciting and primarily research student assessment in technical graphics.

How I became Interested: Technical graphics have always been an area of interest and the need to assess learning is imperative to improve teaching. Teaching students to visualize, design, and create objects requires an understanding of what the students know and can do.

What I Hope Students Learn From Me: It is always my desire to be a role model to students that I work with and teach them much more than content. I strive to show students a passion for excellence, a desire to learn, and how to cultivate a positive community and work team.
