Kelsey John Klein ’24MAT: ‘The College of Education Has Thoroughly Prepared Me to Become a Teacher by Equipping Me with Both the Theoretical Knowledge and Practical Skills Necessary to Succeed’
Kelsey John Klein always had a love for books, but she didn’t initially plan on a career as an English teacher. After becoming a mother, she realized the importance that a good education and good role model can have on a child’s life, so she returned to school herself to pursue a career in education. Now, as she graduates with a Master of Arts in Teaching from the NC State College of Education, she looks forward to sharing her love of literature and learning with her future students.

Why did you choose the NC State College of Education?
NC State’s ability to prepare educators with innovative, hands-on experiences and strong community involvement made it an ideal place for me to grow as a future educator. Beyond academics, I felt a connection to the Wolfpack spirit — one of pride, resilience and a shared sense of purpose.
Why did you choose your concentration?
Teaching English gives me the chance to share my passion with others and encourage them to develop their own love for reading and writing. I believe that books have the power to change lives, and I want my students to experience that magic for themselves.
What do you eventually hope to accomplish in your field?
I want to be the kind of educator who empowers students, showing them that their potential is not limited, and that their efforts are always worth celebrating. I hope to be someone who listens carefully, is able to offer guidance and helps students overcome their obstacles. By providing personalized support, I hope to foster a classroom where students feel safe to express themselves and are able to take risks in their learning.
Do you have a favorite memory from your time in the College of Education?
My favorite memory was during my student teaching experience, when I was able to connect with the incredibly passionate teachers at J.D. Clement Early College High School and their dedicated and curious students. The joy of seeing students light up when they grasp a new concept, or the pride in knowing that I played a part in their growth, is truly fulfilling.
Why did you choose education?
I truly believe in the power of education and in the idea that it can change lives. Growing up, I was incredibly fortunate to have parents who not only imparted knowledge to me but also inspired and supported me in my dreams, helping me to believe in myself. I want to offer that same encouragement and guidance to not only my children but others as well, especially to those who may not always see their own strengths and capabilities.
