What is your educational background?

I received my undergraduate degree in elementary education from NC State in 2015. I then moved to the coast, where I received my AIG certification and Master’s of Elementary Education degree from University of North Carolina at Wilmington. I continued my education by pursuing my math add-on licensure through NC State. I really enjoyed the courses I took for my add-on licensure, so I transferred into the doctoral program for elementary mathematics.

What is your professional background?

I have been a public school teacher for the past nine years at Dixon Elementary, located in Onslow County. I have served as the school’s liaison to UNC-Wilmington for student teacher placement, as well as a mentor teacher to beginning teachers at my school.

Why did you choose the NC State College of Education?

I have enjoyed all the courses and programs that I have been a part of at NC State. It’s obvious that the College of Education continues to strive to be on the forefront of educational pedagogy, and I want to be a part of that community.

Why did you choose your concentration?

I believe that elementary mathematics is the foundation for success in any profession, making it that much more crucial that every student become not only proficient, but master elementary mathematics skills.

What are your research interests?

My research interests include increasing rigor in elementary math curriculums as well as strategies to increase beginning teacher retention.

How will this program help you accomplish your goals?

This program provides me with a wealth of knowledge through access to an education-specific library and resources, as well as access to accomplished professors who continue to actively research and present on the latest pedagogy and research.

Why did you choose education?

I chose education because I love being a teacher. Teaching is a profession that allows me to have fun and be creative everyday. As a teacher, I have a direct impact on the success of every single one of my students lives, and I don’t know of many professions that can claim that.
