Teaching Fellow Lara Cate Wright Selected for North Carolina Space Grant Scholarship

Lara Cate Wright, a junior elementary education major and N.C. Teaching Fellow, has been selected as a recipient of the STEM Pre-Service Teacher Education Scholarship through the North Carolina Space Grant.

As part of receiving the $3,500 scholarship, Wright will complete a series of NASA STEM digital badges, participate in professional opportunities and attend a cohort field trip to NASA Langley Research Center.

“I am honored to be a recipient of the STEM Pre-Service Teacher Scholarship,” Wright said. “STEM education is something I am very passionate about, and I cannot wait to participate in the experiences provided by NASA to learn more about science education.”

The program is designed for pre-service teachers, with the goal of promoting science education in the K-12 classroom and improving pre-college interests in pursuit of science education and science careers.

“This is something that I believe I can help be a part of and improve students’ views of science and science education,” Wright said.

Wright said she is looking forward to being part of the cohort-based system and building a network of pre-service teachers she’ll be able to stay in touch with throughout her career. She is also looking forward to being able to take what she learns in the program to apply it to her future classroom.

“I am excited to gain a greater passion for STEM education and to further my own education in science, especially in space science,” Wright said. “I know that this experience will follow me as I teach my own classroom in the future and I can share my learnings from this scholarship program with my future students.”
