Report: NC State Largest Producer of Mathematics Education Doctorates in N.C., 5th Largest in U.S.

The NC State College of Education is the largest producer of doctoral graduates in mathematics education in North Carolina and the fifth largest producer in the nation, according to a new independent report published in the Notices of the American Mathematical Society. The same report also found that the program No. 12 in the nation among peer recommendations.

NC State a Fulbright Leader — Again

Dr. Margareta Thomson, an associate professor of educational psychology, is one of NC State University's seven U.S. Fulbright Scholars studying, teaching and conducting research around the world in 2018-19. Dr. Thomson is working alongside Babes-Bolyai University in Romania on her project "Fostering Academic Motivation and a STEM Growth Mindset in High Poverty Schools Through Authentic Research Experiences."

Assistant Professor Paula McAvoy on Facilitating Classroom Discussions

In this Q&A, Assistant Professor Paula McAvoy discusses some of the ethical dilemmas teachers face when they introduce controversial issues into the classroom. She will present her talk “The Ethics of Steering Classroom Discussions” as part of the Ethics Across the Disciplines Lecture Series hosted by the Parr Center for Ethics on Feb. 25.

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) named Lee V. Stiff ’78PHD a 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. The award honors NCTM members who have exhibited a lifetime of achievement in mathematics education at the national level.

Empowering a Global Perspective

Mary Ann Danowitz, dean of NC State’s College of Education, has established a study abroad award fund to benefit future education professionals – and their students. The scholarship’s first awardee, Chantal Warfield, fulfilled her study abroad goals by traveling to the United Kingdom for a five-week STEM and liberal studies program.
