With $3.4 Million Grant, Dean Paola Sztajn Expands Project AIM Professional Development to Support Coaches, Principals and Strengthen Focus on Equity

For the past decade, NC State College of Education Dean Paola Sztajn has helped elementary school teachers improve their mathematics practices through Project AIM (All Included in Mathematics). Now, she is expanding the program to better support school leaders and instructional coaches and have a stronger impact on students.

Central North Carolina Schools have hundreds of teacher vacancies. NC State College of Education Dean Paola Stzajn said the college is helping districts fill those vacancies. “Teacher preparation programs are working really hard across our state to put highly qualified teachers in the classroom who want to remain in the profession,” Sztajn said.

Interim Dean Paola Sztajn said she attributes an upward trend in enrollment in the NC State College of Education—up 16 percent since 2015—to the college's commitment to create the conditions in which future teachers can succeed. “We’ve made a lot of investment in scholarships to increase our capacity to provide support for students,” she said. “I think that is making it more viable to become a teacher. We want our teachers as much as possible to graduate without debt.”
