The Conversation: Science Teachers Sacrifice to Provide Lab Materials for Students

Whatever salary the science teacher at your local public school makes per year, subtract US$450. That’s how much money the typical middle and high school science teacher spends out of pocket each year on science lab materials. The $450 figure is based on a study Graduate Research Assistant Emily Cayton and Professor Gail Jones recently conducted to determine if science teachers have adequate funding to teach laboratories and science investigations.

2 NC State Education Projects Featured in 2018 STEM for All Video Showcase

Two videos from the NC State College of Education are featured in the 2018 STEM for All Video Showcase, an event held May 14-21, 2018. During the week-long event, members of the public are invited to view the short videos, discuss them with the presenters online, and vote for ones most effective in conveying creative work.

Last week, teachers-to-be WinnieHope Mamboleo and Cristina Chase Lane marched across the graduation stage at North Carolina State University. This week, they'll be marching with future colleagues at the state capitol in Raleigh, asking for better pay and better school funding.

EdNC.org: Superintendent Johnson Allocates Funds for Literacy Training and Coaching

During a press conference Monday, State Superintendent Mark Johnson said the Department of Public Instruction will partner with the NC State College of Education to help beginning K-2 teachers in 15 low-performing local districts in reading instruction. The program, called Wolfpack WORKS (Ways to Optimize Reading/Writing for Kids Statewide), will also use Read to Achieve funds and combines in-person coaching with NC State professionals and online training.

The pilot initiative will incorporate blended professional development, literacy-specific coaching and the resources first-year, K-2 teachers need to implement effective classroom literacy instruction in high-need elementary schools.
