Scholarship Support Helps Erin Meachum ‘23PHD Pursue Her Career Aspirations of Being a Higher Education Administrator, Creating and Changing Policy

When Erin Meachum ‘23PHD started her undergraduate studies, she had no intention of becoming a teacher. After volunteering at local literacy centers, teaching English overseas, teaching ESL at local community colleges and joining the Ag Institute at NC State, Meachum realized her true passion for the field of education. Now, financial support has allowed her to pursue her career aspiration of becoming a higher education administrator.

As a first-generation college student and a student with a chronic medical condition, private support and scholarships have helped Jennifer Houchins ‘21PHD pursue her doctoral studies. Because of that support, she gives back to the college in hopes that future generations can have the same opportunity the NC State College of Education has provided her.

Students in Assistant Professor Crystal Chen Lee’s Critical Theory and Public Engagement course were asked to submit their final papers for the class for publication. Now, five students whose publications were accepted by EdNC share their experiences with the project.

Born and raised in the Netherlands, University Program Associate Kirsten Hoeflaken ‘18MED always wanted to be a teacher. She was inspired by her fifth grade teacher and went on to teach for over 20 years before moving to the United States. Meet Ginger Burks Draughon ‘20PHD: ‘I Truly Learned a Great Deal and I Value the Investment that NC State and the College of Education Have Made in Me’

When Ginger Burks Draughon ‘20PHD enrolled in the NC State College of Education to earn a Ph.D. in higher education, she was a single, working professional. During her eight-year journey to earn her degree as a part-time student, she has since gotten married and had two children as she balanced family, full-time work and her education. Her own experiences as a part-time student inspired her dissertation research and she hopes to use what she has learned to influence educational policy surrounding part-time students following graduation on Dec. 4, 2020.

Demah Payne ‘20PHD has always been intrigued with the mind and enjoyed understanding why and how people think the way they do. That interest, combined with his passion for helping people with mental health concerns, led him to pursue a Ph.D. in counseling and counselor education from the NC State College of Education.
