Associate Professor Cesar Delgado Will Help Science Students Understand Scale in Virtual Reality Environments Through Work on $1.3M NSF Grant

Young students often hold the belief that the smallest objects in existence are the smallest objects they can see with the naked eye and struggle to conceive of scientific entities that are too small to see. As the co-principal investigator on the three-year “Virtual Reality to Improve Students’ Understanding of the Extremes of Scale in STEM” project, Associate Professor Cesar Delgado, Ph.D., will help uncover how students’ understanding of scale and numeracy can be improved through the use of virtual reality technology.

3 College of Education Graduates Recognized with 2021 Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Awards

Three NC State College of Education graduates were recognized for their research efforts when they were selected to receive the Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Awards during the May 2021 graduation ceremony. Matt Reynolds ’20PHD, now an assistant teaching professor in the College of Education, won for the Department of STEM Education, Sarah Karamarkovich ’17MS, ’20MS, ’21PHD won for the Department of Teacher Education and Learning Sciences and Ezinne Ofoegbu ’21PHD won for the Department of Educational Leadership, Policy, and Human Development.

Assistant Professor Erin Krupa Selected as Recipient of NC State’s Inaugural Goodnight Early Career Innovators Award

Assistant Professor Erin Krupa, Ph.D., has been selected as a recipient of NC State’s inaugural Goodnight Early Career Innovators Award. Recipients of the award show outstanding promise for future achievement or impact in STEM, demonstrate superior scholarly achievement at an early career stage and have a rigorous research agenda that speaks to their potential to advance knowledge in STEM or STEM education.

Several College of Education faculty and students were recognized during the Ebony Harlem Awards ceremony on April 25. Professor Joy Gaston Gayles, Ph.D., and Professor Marc Grimmett, Ph.D., each received awards while Assistant Professor Lisa Bass, Ph.D., and Associate Professor DeLeon Gray, Ph.D., received nominations. Graduate students Chelsea Smith ’22PHD and angela gay-audre also received awards.

NC State College of Education students are showing their gratitude for faculty and staff this week in celebration of Global Advising Week, which runs from May 2-8. Meet Briana Campbell ’21MED: ‘I Believe There is Power in Being Vulnerable and Sharing One’s Story’

Briana Campbell ’21MED has wanted to be a member of a helping profession for as long as she can remember, but she was ultimately drawn to counseling because of her passion for hearing other peoples’ stories and worldviews. She hopes to use her skills to expand counseling services to historically underserved communities when she graduates with a Master of Education in clinical mental health counseling in May 2021.

When Iwinosa O. Idahor ’21PHD came to the NC State College of Education as a North Carolina Teaching Fellow, she recognized the connections and opportunities the colleges offered in helping her to develop as a scholar and practitioner. For that reason, she returned to the College of Education to earn her doctorate degree and she will graduate with a Ph.D. in educational leadership, policy, and human development in May 2021
