Micki Bare, a graduate student in the Master of Arts in Teaching program with a concentration in middle grades social studies, has been named the NC State College of Education’s Student Teacher of the Year.

The award is given out each year to recognize the college’s most outstanding student teacher.

“Being named Student Teacher of the Year is an incredible honor,” Bare said. “Not only does it recognize the hard work and passion I’ve channeled into changing careers, but it also sets the tone for my professional future as I transition to a fully licensed teacher.”

Bare earned her undergraduate degree from NC State more than two decades ago, and has been excited by the opportunity to return and pursue a new career as a middle school social studies teacher.

“Teachers often talk about being motivated by that sparkle in a child’s eyes when they ‘get it,'” Bare said. “That same sense of magic happened during my student teaching semester, as I was guided through applying what I learned. The experience boosted my self-confidence as a teacher and increased the joy and satisfaction I get from teaching.”

Bare completed her student teaching at Uwharrie Ridge Six-Twelve in the Randolph County School System, where she credits her fellow educators with helping her apply the lessons she learned in the NC State College of Education.

“My mentor teacher at my school and my student teacher supervisor were both incredibly insightful,” Bare said. “As a result, I received feedback and support that helped me successfully put into practice the methods and theories I learned throughout the MAT program.”

Barre will continue to teach middle school social studies at Uwharrie Ridge Six-Twelve during the upcoming school year.
