Chandler Zavala ’22MED: ‘I Chose Education to Learn How Others Think, to Specialize in Supporting Health Professionals and to Make a Change in the Healthcare World’

After losing both of his grandparents his junior year, Chandler Zavala, an offensive lineman on the Wolfpack football team, was inspired to pursue a degree that allowed him to support health care professionals. 

He found that degree in the NC State College of Education, where he will earn his Master of Education in Adult and Community College Education (Health Professions Education specialization).

After graduation, Zavala plans to pursue a career in professional football, but he also hopes to one day have the opportunity to make a difference in the health care world.

Why did you choose the NC State College of Education?

I wanted to earn a degree where I could specialize in working with health professionals.

Why did you choose your specialization?

I chose to specialize in working with health professionals because I lost both of my grandparents during my junior year, and I have always been around health care. 

What’s your next step? What do you have planned after graduation?

I’m training to become a professional athlete.

How has the College of Education prepared you for that next step?

It has shown me that we may all come from different walks of life, but we all want to succeed. 

What do you hope to accomplish in your field?

I hope to eventually become a CEO and help those in the healthcare world who are not as fortunate as others.

Do you have a favorite memory from your time in the College of Education?

Getting accepted into the program and beginning both my education and athletic career.

Tell us about an experience you had with the College of Education that had the biggest impact on you or your career.

Learning from my professors — they taught me how to look at things from a different perspective.
