Wolfpack WORKS Receives $12.2M Grant from DPI to Improve Early Literacy Across NC

The NC State College of Education’s Wolfpack WORKS literacy initiative has received a three-year, $12,266,816 grant from the N.C. Department of Public Instruction to expand its support of beginning K-2 teachers and improve early literacy outcomes across North Carolina. Started in summer 2018 and now in its pilot year, Wolfpack WORKS has worked with over 170 first- and second-year K-2 teachers in 16 high-need school districts in North Carolina to help them improve early literacy instruction. With the new grant, Wolfpack WORKS will continue for at least three more years and expand its support to include third-year K-2 teachers.

Dr. John Nietfeld, a professor of educational psychology at the NC State College of Education, has received a 2019-20 Internationalization Seed Grant from the NC State Office of Global Engagement to travel to Spain to begin working with the University of Oviedo on a Spanish version of his game-based learning environment Missions with Monty

Assistant Professor Teya Rutherford Earns NSF CAREER Grant to Study Mathematics Motivation

Dr. Teya Rutherford, an assistant professor of educational psychology at the NC State College of Education, will use the five-year, $1 million grant to study how motivation functions to support student’s in-the-moment choices during learning. She is the first faculty member to receive an NSF Early Faculty CAREER grant while on the college's faculty.

NC State a Fulbright Leader — Again

Dr. Margareta Thomson, an associate professor of educational psychology, is one of NC State University's seven U.S. Fulbright Scholars studying, teaching and conducting research around the world in 2018-19. Dr. Thomson is working alongside Babes-Bolyai University in Romania on her project "Fostering Academic Motivation and a STEM Growth Mindset in High Poverty Schools Through Authentic Research Experiences."

She will present her talk “The Ethics of Steering Classroom Discussions” as part of the Ethics Across the Disciplines Lecture Series hosted by the Parr Center for Ethics on Feb. 25.

In the white paper “Moving Our Field Forward: Practitioner Research in the Social Studies,” Associate Professor Meghan Manfra and colleagues offer an introductory guide to practitioner research for social studies educators. This free open resource for educators -- available to download now -- explains how practitioner research can improve social studies practice and shares representative examples from the field to encourage implementation.
