NC State College of Education Awarded Over $5 Million in Research Funding From April-June, 2021

Faculty and researchers at the NC State College of Education, including the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation and the Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research, were awarded $5,296,858 to support 18 projects from April 1 to June 30, 2021.

AERA-NSF-funded Project Allows Assistant Professor Jackie Relyea To Explore Co-development of Reading Ability, Science Content Knowledge Among English Language Learners

A recent study co-authored by Assistant Professor Jackie Relyea, Ph.D., found that a group of first graders in N.C. who participated in a 10-day reading program that used a series of science books had higher science knowledge and improved vocabulary knowledge, reading comprehension and argumentative writing compared with children who received regular instruction. She will build on those findings through a 1-year, $25,000 grant from the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and National Science Foundation (NSF).

Associate Professor Dennis Davis and Assistant Professor Jackie Reylea Will Help English Language Learners with Reading Comprehension Difficulties Through $1.4M Department of Education Grant

Young English language learners can often struggle with some of the more complex aspects of written language, leading to difficulties in reading comprehension. To address this issue, Associate Professor Dennis Davis, Ph.D., and Assistant Professor Jackie Reylea, Ph.D., will use a $1.4 million grant to develop a new small-group intervention for English language learners in grades 3-5.
