Scholarship Support Helps Erin Meachum ‘23PHD Pursue Her Career Aspirations of Being a Higher Education Administrator, Creating and Changing Policy

When Erin Meachum ‘23PHD started her undergraduate studies, she had no intention of becoming a teacher. After volunteering at local literacy centers, teaching English overseas, teaching ESL at local community colleges and joining the Ag Institute at NC State, Meachum realized her true passion for the field of education. Now, financial support has allowed her to pursue her career aspiration of becoming a higher education administrator.

Chelsea Smith ‘22PHD, who is pursuing her Ph.D. in educational leadership, policy, and human development in the higher education program area of study, recently co-authored an article on the experiences of formerly incarcerated college students which was published in the Journal of College Student Retention: Research, Theory & Practice.

From Dec. 7-11, 2020, master’s students in the NC State College of Education’s Higher Education Program will receive enhanced training to become virtual student success coaches who can support undergraduate students through remote learning situations.

Joy Gaston Gayles, Ph.D., professor of higher education and senior advisor for advancing diversity, equity and inclusion at the NC State College of Education, has been named president-elect of the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE), a scholarly society with 2,000 members dedicated to higher education as a field of study.
