Scholarship Support Made it Possible for Cheyenne Quarless ’21 to Attend the NC State College of Education and Earn Her Bachelor’s Degree in Middle Grades Education

As the recipient of the Paul and Geneva Jenkins Scholarship and the Dr. Estelle E. White Scholarship, Cheyenne Quarless ’21 was able to attend the NC State College of Education. She will graduate this May with a degree in middle grades English Language Arts and social studies education.

Amber Smith ’21PHD has had a passion for math for as long as she can remember -- earning both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in applied mathematics. After discovering a love for teaching, Smith decided to pursue a Ph.D. in learning and teaching in STEM mathematics and statistics education program area of study from the NC State College of Education.

In high school, Samuel Hammett ’21 hated math. But that changed when he got a teacher who made math more enjoyable. It was then that he realized the impact a teacher can have on a student’s life. In May, Hammett will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics education, hoping to make a similar impact on students as his favorite teachers had on him.

Nash County Elementary School Assistant Principal of the Year Leo Nieves ‘18MSA: ‘It is My Goal to Help Make the Educational Experience for All Involved a Positive One’

As a first-year teacher, Leo Nieves ’18MSA was afraid to ask for help because he didn’t want to look like he didn’t know what he was doing. That was the biggest mistake he ever made. Now, as assistant principal at Benvenue Elementary School in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, he wants to help other teachers be successful.

Scholarship support made it possible for Churchill to have that experience. Because of that, Churchill gives back to the college in an effort to help other students have the opportunity to participate in enriching college experiences.

Growing up in Pachuca, Mexico, doctoral student Regina Ayala Chavez ’23PHD was introduced at an early age to pro-environmental behaviors. That early introduction inspired her to dive deeper into climate change when she enrolled in college. Now, she has been selected as a 2021-22 Southeast Climate Adaptation Science Center Global Change Fellow.
