#WhyIChoseEducation: Gwen Barclay-Toy

As part of Celebrating 90 Years of NC State Education, we asked you to share your stories of why you chose education and why you love the NC State College of Education. Below is one of the many stories we received demonstrating how we’re leading the way in education in North Carolina and beyond.

Name: Gwen Barclay-Toy
Graduation Year:
 1993
Program: Master of Education
Career Role & Responsibilities: Teaching English language conversation to international visiting scholars at NC State’s Intensive English Program and tutoring international MBA students at Duke’s Fuqua School of Business

Why did you enter the field of education?
As the daughter of two teachers, I knew from my youth that I wanted to teach. Teaching English and ESL suits me well because of my love of language, interest in internationals, and opportunity to improve people’s lives as well as learn about other cultures.

Why did you choose to earn your degree from the NC State College of Education?
I was teaching adults but had never pursued courses in adult education, so a degree program in adult/community college education complemented subject matter teaching skills and experience I already had.
