N.C. School Counselor and College of Education Alumna Honored at January White House Ceremony

It’s one thing to be honored and have your name pop up on an announcement alongside some of the top high-school counselors in the country.

But it’s another when the First Lady reads your name and the comments your students explained why they appreciate you.

That’s exactly what happened to Durenda Johnson Ward, who is a school counselor at Centennial Campus Magnet Middle School in Raleigh, on Jan. 28, when she was honored by the American School Counselor Association at the White House as a finalist for the 2016 School Counselor of the Year.
