EdNC.org: How Public School Educators Built a Radically Innovative School

What would students come up with if given the chance to design their own schools? That's the question a team of administrators -- including NC State College of Education graduates Valerie Bridges '10EDD, Donnell Cannon '16MSA, Jenny O'Meara '16MSA and Erin Swanson '12MSA -- in Edgecombe County posed two years ago when thinking of ways to increase student engagement, graduation rates and more in their county. The response to that question helped create the North Phillips School of Innovation, a micro school pilot in Tarboro, North Carolina.

NCDPI: Edgecombe County School Leader Named 2019 N.C. Principal of the Year

Matthew Bristow-Smith '14MSA was named Wells Fargo North Carolina Principal of the Year Friday, May 10. He took the helm of Edgecombe Early College High School shortly after completing the NC State College of Education's Northeast Leadership Academy (NELA) in 2014. Of the award and his role within his school, Bristow-Smith said, “The work is not about us. The work is about the kids. It’s about the families. It’s about the communities that we serve.”

A study from the Hunt Institute highlights two innovative programs – the Northeast Leadership Academy at the NC State College of Education and Kansas City Pathway to Leadership in Urban Schools (KC PLUS) in Missouri. In creating pro­grams to meet the unique needs of districts located in rural and urban settings, respectively, both NELA and KC PLUS have built rigorous, practice-based principal preparation programs utilizing equity-fo­cused school leader development. The Hunt Institute takes a closer look at each program.
