An EdTalks 2019 Recap: A Night of Celebrating Extraordinary Educators, Life-changing Education

The NC State College of Education hosted EdTalks: A Celebration of K-12 Education in Stewart Theatre on the evening of Monday, Oct. 21. Six hundred people gathered to hear local leaders and celebrities discuss the importance of K-12 education and to celebrate College of Education alumni who have received national, state and district-wide awards in 2018-19 for their work in K-12 schools. Kimberly Ferrell ’02MSA, ’13EDD, who has won multiple Teacher of the Year awards, adds another honor to her name: 2018-19 Wells Fargo Principal of the Year for Durham County Public Schools.

When she was growing up in Bear Creek, N.C., North Carolina History Teacher of the Year Amy King ’01MED thought her father had the best job in the world. He was an agriculture education teacher at Chatham Central High School. Today, she teaches at the same school with the same passion she witnessed from her dad.

Our alumni have received numerous accolades for their work in education during the past year, including being named the National School Psychologist of the Year, North Carolina Principal of the Year, Durham Public Schools’ Teacher of the Year, Johnston County Public Schools’ Outstanding First-Year Teacher, and Wake County Public School System's Principal of the Year, Teacher of the Year and Diane Kent-Parker First-Year Teacher. Becoming the MAIN Man

Inspired by his own challenges and life experiences, Jasmin Spain ’12MED launched the Males Addressing Issues and Needs (MAIN) Initiative in Pitt County to provide young men of color with the resources and support they need to navigate the challenges unique to them in today’s society. The initiative provides mentoring, leadership programs, training in diversity, civil rights and sexual misconduct, and workshops on handling new careers, promotions and finances.
