Inquiring, Collaborating and Creating During a Pandemic: New Literacies Teacher Leader Institute Moves Online

Friday Institute Launches Student Video Contest to Find Out What Middle, High School Students Want for the Future of Education

The Friday Institute for Educational Innovation, in partnership with LearnPlatform and the Wake Partnership for Postsecondary Success, is running its first-ever student video contest, called reImagining Schools, to give students a voice in what the future of education and learning looks like for the state of North Carolina.

During the showcase, a team of students under the direction of Person Early College for Innovation and Leadership’s engineering teacher, David Price, created a UV water treatment system.

PBI Global Provides Authentic, High-Impact Learning for an NC Rural/Urban School Partnership

Through a two-year, NSF-funded DRK-12 exploratory grant, a multidisciplinary team of researchers at the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation and the NC State College of Education are examining how engagement in Project-Based Inquiry (PBI) Global, a collaborative global inquiry process, affects the development of learners’ science content knowledge and motivation.

MSEN Program Expands Reach To Edgecombe County to Bring STEM Experiences to Rural Students

Braska Williams, director of the North Carolina Mathematics and Science Education Network Pre-College Program (MSEN) at the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation, knows the impact his program has had on students. Now, because of a new four-year, $1.4 million NSF grant, MSEN will expand its program beyond Raleigh and into Edgecombe County Public Schools (ECPS) to address the lack of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) access for middle school students in the district.

Friday Institute Partnership with Sampson County Schools Brings Data-Rich Activities and Resources Into Classrooms

The Hub for Innovation and Research in Statistics Education (HI-RiSE) at the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation and the NC State College of Education recently worked with Sampson County Schools teachers across disciplines to incorporate data into their classroom practices and help students understand how to critically analyze scientific phenomena and make evidence-based decisions.

 Carla C. Johnson, Ph.D., a senior faculty fellow with the NC State College of Education’s Friday Institute for Educational Innovation and a professor of science education in the college, will develop and study two new Professional Learning Online Modules (PLOM) for educators through a recently funded, two-year grant.
