Cosmos Magazine: Put Science Tools on Santa’s List

When children have greater access to science tools at home – equipment like rulers, measuring cups and kitchen scales – and time to tinker with them, it can strengthen their interest and confidence in science. That’s according to a new study published in Research in Science Education, led by Megan Ennes and co-investigator Gail Jones, together with the Florida Museum of Natural History.

WUNC: For one NC county, the reading gap between high and low-income students narrowed during COVID

A new study on a large North Carolina school district found the reading gap narrowed between high and low-income students there during the pandemic. The study by researchers at NC State's College of Education, in affiliation with researchers at Harvard and other universities, examined the reading scores of third through fifth graders at about 180 elementary schools in an unnamed North Carolina county.

2022 Friday Medal to Honor Two Leaders in Education Research and Practice Together for the First Time

The Friday Institute for Educational Innovation has selected James A. Banks, the Kerry and Linda Killinger Endowed Chair in Diversity Studies Emeritus at the University of Washington College of Education and founding director of the Banks Center for Educational Justice, and Joann Blumenfeld, founder and program director for Catalyst at The Science House, to receive its 2022 Friday Medal award. For the first time, the Friday Institute has decided to honor both a practitioner and researcher within the same year.

Central North Carolina Schools have hundreds of teacher vacancies. NC State College of Education Dean Paola Stzajn said the college is helping districts fill those vacancies. “Teacher preparation programs are working really hard across our state to put highly qualified teachers in the classroom who want to remain in the profession,” Sztajn said.
