Mini-Grants Crowdfunding Campaign Raises Over $8,000 to Increase Student Teachers’ Impact in the Classroom

More than 60 donors came together to support student teacher mini-grants as part of the NC State University's 2023 crowdfunding campaign, raising funds for student teachers to purchase supplies and materials they can use to make a greater impact on their classrooms.

Despite schools in the United States becoming increasingly linguistically and ethnically diverse, school desegregation has been on a decline since hitting a peak in the 1980s, according to research. Now, Assistant Professor Jenn Ayscue and doctoral student Victor Cadilla are exploring the potential of two-way dual language immersion (DLI) programs to diminish segregation, particularly for multilingual learners.

With $42.1M in Funding, NC State College of Education Researchers Set New Record from Grant Funding Awarded in a Single Year

Faculty and research scholars in the NC State College of Education, including the Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research and the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation, were awarded $42,138,265 in external funding to support 66 projects in the 2022-23 academic year, setting a new record for total dollar amount awarded in a single year.

FutureEd: How Subject Knowledge Strengthens Reading Skills

A study co-authored by Assistant Professor Jackie Relyea suggests that a curriculum that promotes science learning over time not only increases students’ science vocabulary and ability to read science-related texts, it enhances their general reading comprehension and even their mathematics achievement.

Bill Cowher ’79 Comes Home for Ring of Honor Induction 

Bill Cowher ’79, Super Bowl-winning coach and member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, became the 12th member of NC State’s Ring of Honor last weekend. Completing a degree in education was just as important to his post-playing career as his time on the NC State football field. “Coaching is teaching,” he said. “I learned so much from . . . my time in the College of Education. The 4 1/2 years I spent here shaped everything that followed.”

Pro Football Hall of Famer Bill Cower '79 credited the the NC State College of Education for much of his on-field success as a coach. “I always said before, coaching is teaching,” Cowher said. “I learned so much being here through that. My time here — the four and a half years I spent here — were very, very instrumental in my upbringing.”
