Campus Programs

Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA)

The Department of Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA) researches, designs and implements unique programs that promote the pursuit of academic success, retention and graduation of students, with an emphasis on African American, Native American and Hispanic students. Many of the programs and services expand students’ cultural horizon while honoring their respective cultural experiences.

Symposium for Multicultural Scholars (SMS)

The Symposium for Multicultural Scholars aims to help foster a sense of community for incoming NC State students (and their parents) by providing them with information about campus resources, a support network and information on African-American cultural heritage. This innovative program dates back three decades at NC State, and continues to help multicultural students better prepare for the start of their collegiate careers.

Freshman Honors Convocation

The Freshman Honors Convocation recognizes African American, Native American and Hispanic/Latino first year students who achieve a 3.0 or higher grade point average during their first semester at NC State. NC State is proud to have consistently honored 40% or more of these freshman classes for the last several years. The convocation has expanded over the years to include the families of student honorees. In addition, awards are presented to the colleges that have 50% or more of their combined first year African American, Native American and Hispanic students to achieve a 3.0 or higher grade point average.

Peer Mentor Program

The Peer Mentor Program targets first-year African American, Native American and Hispanic students. The primary objective of the program is to contribute to the advancement of first-year students by aiding in their academic, emotional and social adjustments to college. Any first year student can request to be served by an upper class mentor through the Peer Mentor Program. Any upper class student with a 2.5 or greater total grade point average can apply to serve as a mentor.

Allies for Students with Disabilities

The primary objective of the Allies for Students with Disabilities is to serve as a support network for NC State students with disabilities and to advocate for enhancing the understanding of and appreciation for students with disabilities throughout the campus community.
