Bio

I currently serve as a Senior Research Scholar at the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation and Teaching Assistant Professor in the College of Education. Prior to my work in research and evaluation, I spent 10 years in K-12 education, beginning my teaching career as a Peace Corps Volunteer and later teaching in the public school systems of Michigan and North Carolina. In 2009, I received the NCCTM Outstanding Elementary Math Teacher distinction and was awarded Math Teacher of the Year by my school district.

Research Description

My research and evaluation work centers on evidence-based design and the use of analytics to improve online and blended learning systems. I currently serve as PI on the Friday Institute’s research and evaluation work for North Carolina’s Digital Learning Initiative. Recent research roles include Principal Investigator on a MOOC Research Initiative funded grant by the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation and co-researcher on a U.S. Dept. of Education funded study involving online communities of practice. I have led several comprehensive mixed-methods evaluations including a pilot and efficacy study of a 1:1 pilot initiative in a large urban Tennessee school district; the Massively Open Online Courses for Educators (MOOC-Eds) for the Hewlett and Oak Foundations; the Leadership in Blended Learning initiatives funded by the Learning Accelerator; and North Carolina's Race to the Top online professional development efforts.
