The Noyce METS program is funded with about $1 million from the&nbsp;National Science Foundation\u2019s Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship program. NC State\u2019s local&nbsp;program aims to increase the number of highly qualified secondary mathematics teachers who&nbsp;double major in mathematics or statistics and mathematics education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scholars work together as a community with faculty at NC State and teachers and students at&nbsp;local high-needs high schools. The principal investigator of the Noyce METS II program is Dr.&nbsp;Karen Hollebrands, Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor and Professor in&nbsp;Mathematics Education. The co-principal investigators are Drs. Hollylynne Lee, Laura&nbsp;Bottomley, and Molly Fenn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Five scholars were recently selected to become a part of a national community of Noyce&nbsp;Scholars. As recipients, undergraduate students receive $36,000 for the last four semesters of&nbsp;their program to assist with tuition, living costs, conference travel, and technology materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Graduate students pursuing a Master\u2019s degree in Mathematics Education leading to an initial&nbsp;license to teach middle or high school mathematics receive $25,000. She is double majoring in Mathematics and Secondary Mathematics&nbsp;Education. Nisbet is a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority, treasurer of NCCTM Kappa&nbsp;Chapter, secretary for the Educational Council and Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rachel Coffman is a junior. She is double majoring in Mathematics and Mathematics Education,&nbsp;and plans to student teach in Spring of 2017. Coffman is involved with the NC State Catholic&nbsp;Campus Ministries group and Club Cross Country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zaida Schuffer is a graduate student pursuing a Master of Arts in Teaching. She has an&nbsp;undergraduate degree in Architectural Engineering from Oklahoma State University. Schuffert is&nbsp;planning to student teach in Fall of 2016 and graduate in Spring of 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Margaret Leak is a rising senior. She is seeking Bachelors of Science degrees in Mathematics&nbsp;and Secondary Mathematics Education, as well as a Bachelors of Arts in Communications with a&nbsp;minor in Spanish. Leak plans to student teach in Fall of 2016.
