Through this challenging time, NC State\u2019s College of Education has been part of the solution in addressing urgent educational challenges associated with the coronavirus pandemic and racial injustices while strengthening its land-grant mission to champion the educational success of all. Below is a look at some of the ways the college did that in the past year and a few other highlights. Photo by Marc Hall<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the COVID-19 pandemic led to a move to at-home learning in March, dozens of faculty, staff and students from the College of Education have been involved in delivering a variety of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/coronavirus-college-updates\/resources-for-covid-19\/\">educational resources such as webinars, professional development and tips related to COVID-19<\/a>. Over 70,000 educators, leaders and caregivers have been reached through the college\u2019s efforts so far.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faculty have worked to provide resources on topics such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/news\/2020\/04\/07\/associate-professor-jessica-hunt-and-assistant-professor-jamie-pearson-helping-students-with-disabilities-learn-remotely-during-the-coronavirus-covid-19-pandemic\/\">helping students with disabilities learn remotely during the pandemic<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/news\/2020\/04\/13\/associate-professor-meghan-manfra-offers-advice-resources-for-finding-credible-news-during-the-coronavirus-covid-19-pandemic\/\">how to find credible news sources during the pandemic<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/news\/2020\/04\/14\/free-math-mapper-tool-helps-parents-teachers-advance-mathematical-learning-for-middle-grades-students-at-home-during-the-coronavirus-covid-19-pandemic\/\">math tools to help parents and teachers teach advanced math skills to middle school students<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/news\/2020\/04\/17\/clinical-mental-health-counseling-students-share-common-mental-health-struggles-of-covid-19-tips-for-coping\/\">tips for coping with mental health<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The work of the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation and Belk Center for Community College Leadership has been invaluable to the state during this time. The Friday Institute alone has reached over 50,000 educators through&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/news\/2020\/03\/30\/friday-institutes-commitment-to-educators-students-continues-amidst-covid-19-outbreak\/\">professional learning<\/a>. In addition to forming a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/advancing-dei\/about-the-college-of-education-change-agent-task-force\/\">task force<\/a>&nbsp;to address issues related to racial injustice, faculty have authored resources to foster&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/news\/anti-racist-ela\/\">anti-racist education in classrooms<\/a>,&nbsp;empowered historically marginalized&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/news\/2020\/11\/20\/with-help-of-literacy-and-community-initiative-directed-by-assistant-professor-crystal-chen-lee-high-school-students-with-juntos-n-c-publish-peer-reviewed-article\/\">youth voices<\/a>, released publications to improve&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/news\/2020\/07\/09\/professor-sylvia-nassar-provides-recommendations-for-multicultural-and-social-justice-counseling-as-guest-co-editor-of-journal-of-counseling-and-development\/\">multi-cultural and social justice counseling<\/a>&nbsp;practices, helped students gain&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/news\/2020\/11\/09\/i-have-intentionally-changed-my-way-of-thinking-course-taught-by-assistant-professor-jenn-ayscue-helps-students-gain-new-perspectives-on-equity-issues\/\">new perspectives on equity issues<\/a>&nbsp;and found a way to reduce barriers for doctoral students of color in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/news\/2020\/11\/03\/ahead-of-2020-dallas-herring-lecture-belk-center-reflects-on-work-surrounding-covid-19-support-and-equity-initiatives\/\">Community College Leadership program<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alumni and graduate students, meanwhile, have helped to develop&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/news\/2020\/08\/25\/higher-education-administration-alumna-advocates-for-equity-work-as-nc-state-office-for-institutional-equity-and-diversity-intern-develops-diversity-education-resources\/\">Diversity Education Resources<\/a>, established a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/news\/2020\/08\/19\/higher-education-alumna-creates-white-anti-racist-educators-reading-group-in-effort-to-generate-action-toward-more-equitable-learning-and-working-environments\/\">White Anti-Racist Educators Reading Group<\/a>&nbsp;to facilitate more equitable learning environments and helped to revamp&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/diversity.ncsu.edu\/news\/2020\/05\/01\/graduate-students-help-advance-equity-work\/\">NC State\u2019s Equal Opportunity Institute<\/a>, among other initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"has-aqua-400-background-color wp-block-ncst-big-fact\">\n  <div class=\"big-fact__container\">\n    <h2 class=\"big-fact__heading\"><\/h2>\n    <p class=\"big-fact__support\">&#8220;This is a pivotal moment in our nation\u2019s history, and it is urgent we do more and we do better now. Our college will strive every day to do so. Photo by Marc Hall<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faculty and staff in the College of Education, including research associates with the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation and the Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research, were awarded 54 grants totaling&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/news\/2020\/09\/08\/with-30-5m-in-funding-awarded-in-fy2019-20-college-of-education-faculty-set-record-for-grants-awarded-for-third-consecutive-year\/\">$30,485,332 in the 2019-20 academic year<\/a>, setting a record for highest total dollar amounts awarded in a single year for the third consecutive year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This funding goes directly toward supporting improvements in North Carolina schools, colleges and communities. Even this fall, the college\u2019s new student enrollment increased 2%.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/news\/2020\/09\/15\/donor-support-boosts-access-and-inclusion-for-master-of-arts-in-teaching-program\/\">Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 an 100% online accelerated teaching licensure program through which students earn both a master\u2019s degree and their initial teaching license \u2014 increased by 15% over last year. The award recognizes a team dedicated to community-based learning and mutually beneficial action around local issues, the creation of inclusionary teams and the use of democracy in the classroom, community and at home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The honor came on the heels of a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/news\/2020\/03\/26\/3-75m-grant-will-help-train-new-cohorts-of-school-leaders-through-innovative-principal-preparation-program\/\">$3.75 million grant from the N.C. Principal Fellows Commission<\/a>&nbsp;that enables the MSA program to expand delivery of the innovative program through the training of two new cohorts of future principals and the development of new partnerships with North Carolina school districts. Amaya Dicker \u201821, a middle grades English Language Arts and social studies education major, served as a&nbsp;manager of the Rising Readers Program at International House in her hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina. Teaching Fellow Breanna Goins \u201921, a mathematics education major, worked with the recovery program at North Surry High School, her alma mater.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The College of Education Summer Internship Program is supported by gifts in memory of Warfield to the College of Education Excellence Fund and from a generous gift from the John M. Our partnerships with multiple school districts across North Carolina \u2014 including our $18 million grant funded&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/news\/2020\/04\/09\/wolfpack-works-continues-to-support-beginning-teachers-help-kids-improve-literacy-skills-from-home-during-covid-19\/\">Wolfpack WORKS literacy initiative<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 also allowed us to offer numerous programs to provide support and professional development to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/news\/how-nc-states-college-of-education-helps-in-service-teachers-across-north-carolina-succeed\/\">in-service teachers<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Friday Institute for Educational Innovation helped students learn about science through&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/news\/2020\/01\/23\/friday-institute-partners-with-vance-county-schools-to-bring-immersive-virtual-reality-technology-into-science-classrooms\/\">virtual reality technology<\/a>, helped teachers&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/news\/2020\/03\/24\/friday-institute-partnership-with-sampson-county-schools-brings-data-rich-activities-and-resources-into-classrooms\/\">incorporate data into their classroom practices<\/a>, delivered&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/news\/2020\/05\/08\/msen-program-expands-reach-to-edgecombe-county-to-bring-stem-experiences-to-rural-students\/\">STEM experiences to underserved, rural students<\/a>&nbsp;and continued their&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/news\/2020\/03\/02\/friday-institutes-longtime-commitment-to-digital-learning-helps-change-north-carolinas-education-landscape\/\">commitment to improving digital learning<\/a>&nbsp;in all 115 school districts in North Carolina.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, the Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research reached more than 500 individuals with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ednc.org\/reducing-barriers-community-college-students-compassionate-virtual-mentoring\/?utm_source=rss&amp;utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_campaign=reducing-barriers-community-college-students-compassionate-virtual-mentoring\">online workshops and seminars<\/a>, helped community college leaders address ways to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/news\/2020\/04\/07\/community-college-leaders-address-ways-to-increase-postsecondary-credential-attainment-at-belk-centers-presidents-academy-symposiums\/\">increase postsecondary credential attainment<\/a>, particularly for underserved populations, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/news\/2020\/11\/11\/like-a-flash-of-lightning-in-the-night-the-pandemic-revealed-all-the-cracks-and-fissures-2020-dallas-herring-lecture-explores-the-insights-learned-from-covid-19-impact-at-community\/\">discussed the challenges and opportunities<\/a>&nbsp;community colleges face in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research Supports Presidents Amidst COVID-19\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ussPX879-78?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; With support from the Excellence Fund, the college offered&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/news\/2020\/10\/12\/eight-college-of-education-doctoral-students-to-receive-dissertation-research-continuity-grants-to-help-offset-challenges-faced-during-covid-19-pandemic\/\">grants to eight doctoral students<\/a>&nbsp;to help offset those challenges to complete their dissertation research. Faculty&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.ncsu.edu\/2020\/11\/teaching-the-pack-valerie-faulkner\/\">found ways to adapt their courses<\/a>&nbsp;to continue to offer highly relevant and personal instruction, METRC kept students connected through&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/news\/2020\/08\/19\/metrc-holds-summer-audiobook-club-for-college-of-education-undergraduate-and-master-of-arts-in-teaching-students\/\">a summer audiobook club<\/a>, Teaching Fellows connected over&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/news\/2020\/04\/10\/virtual-dinners-bring-teaching-fellows-together-for-learning-community\/\">virtual dinners<\/a>&nbsp;and the Student Success and Advising Center offered support through&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/news\/2020\/04\/17\/college-of-educations-student-success-graduate-student-support-teams-offer-support-to-students-through-virtual-engagement\/\">virtual engagement<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students and staff within the college also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/news\/2020\/04\/09\/nc-state-college-of-education-students-lend-a-helping-hand-find-creative-ways-to-support-educators-and-each-other-amid-covid-19-outbreak\/\">found ways to support each other and their local communities<\/a>&nbsp;through various projects, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/news\/2020\/05\/11\/say-village-students-provide-virtual-1-on-1-support-to-mentees-education-advisors-host-digital-programs-during-coronavirus-covid-19-outbreak\/\">virtual one-on-one meetings<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ced.ncsu.edu\/news\/2020\/04\/10\/nc-state-stem-early-college-high-school-liaison-amber-mcgregor-moves-tutoring-advising-online-to-connect-with-students\/\">online academic advising, tutoring and coaching<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"has-indigo-400-background-color wp-block-ncst-big-fact\">\n  <div class=\"big-fact__container\">\n    <h2 class=\"big-fact__heading\"><\/h2>\n    <p class=\"big-fact__support\">\u201cMy teaching strategy is always evolving, and with the COVID-19 pandemic I have had to make some changes.
