Council on Multicultural Initiatives and Diversity Celebrates Cultural Heritage of Educators Through Events, Guest Speakers Like Documentarian, Educator and Author Doris Derby, Ph.D.

When approaching civil rights with students at Georgia State University, Doris Derby, Ph.D., always used what she called “The Five Cs.” She shared this philosophy and more about her experiences during the Council on Multicultural Initiatives and Diversity’s Tuesday Together gathering on March 23, 2021.

‘I Want to Hold Our Feet to the Fire Around Justice:’ Gloria Ladson-Billings Discusses Education After COVID, Civil Unrest During Don C. Locke Multiculturalism and Social Justice Symposium

As a former social studies educator, Gloria Ladson-Billings, Ph.D.,says she carries around a copy of the United States Constitution in her backpack on a regular basis. While many educational institutions are currently focused on issues of equity, Ladson-Billings said the more important term is one that is written into that Constitution as a fundamental right for all: justice.

For Assistant Professor Michelle Falter, Ph.D., anti-racist education is a 24/7 attitude and mindset. Her work in practicing and promoting anti-racist education was recently honored with the North Carolina English Teachers’ Association’s first-ever Anti-Racist Teaching Award.
