Donisha Barnes ’21MSA, ’24EDD: ‘I Have Always Been Passionate About Empowering Others and Making a Difference in the Lives of Children’

During Donisha Barnes’ educational journey, she noticed the impact that dedicated teachers and supportive learning environments could have on students. This inspired her to pursue a career in education, and she currently works as Edgecombe County Public Schools’ coordinator of talent recruitment and development.

In December, Barnes will graduate from the NC State College of Education with a doctoral degree in educational leadership.

Meet Donisha:

Hometown: Rocky Mount, North Carolina

Degree: Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership

Why did you choose the NC State College of Education?

I chose North Carolina State University for both my Master of School Administration and my Doctorate in Educational Leadership because of its reputation for developing exceptional leaders in education.

Why did you choose your concentration?

Pursuing degrees in educational leadership was a natural progression of my desire to influence education on a broader scale. I wanted to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to support teachers, empower students and create learning environments where every child has the opportunity to thrive.

How has the College of Education prepared you for your next step?

The College of Education has been instrumental in preparing me for my next step as I transition into district-level leadership and work toward my ultimate goal of becoming a superintendent. Through its rigorous and research-based programs, I have gained a deep understanding of educational leadership, policy and systemic change. The program has equipped me with the skills to think critically, lead with purpose and implement strategies that promote excellence in education.

What do you hope to accomplish in your field?

By addressing systemic challenges and creating opportunities for innovation, I aim to make a meaningful and enduring difference in the lives of students, educators and communities.

Why did you choose education?

I have always been passionate about empowering others and making a difference in the lives of children. From a young age, I recognized the transformative power of education and its ability to open doors and create opportunities for individuals, regardless of their background. I wanted to be a part of that process, helping students realize their potential and providing them with the tools they need to succeed.
