Charge to Students

Student speaker Monica Meza

Monica Meza, who earned a master’s degree in higher education administration, delivered the charge to students, addressing them both in English and in her native language of Spanish several times throughout her speech. She reminded fellow graduates of the power that education has to change a person’s life, including how it changed her own future as a first-generation student from Mexico, as well as the impact educators have on the lives of their students.

All throughout my academic career these educators believed in me before I believed in myself. They supported me and walked me through obstacles and moments of doubt. I can imagine many of you here today also had someone special who gave you a supportive push. And this little push propelled you to discover more of your own courage, grit and resilience to build the person you are today. You will have the opportunity to have this same impact on someone else’s life.
— Monica Meza

College of Education Dean Paola Sztajn

“Today is a celebration – a celebration of what you have achieved and of your decision to choose education. Today is also a new start in your career as an educator. And we know that being an educator is hard. You have chosen to work in a field that is not always supported as it should be and you have chosen a profession that can attract a lot of scrutiny. It’s an emotionally demanding profession, especially right now. But we in the College of Education are sure you have the tools you need to succeed and we are here to support and cheer you along the way.”

Please never forget why you chose education and the power you have to effect change. Because you chose education, you are making a transformative impact.
