#WhyIChoseEducation: Hannah Powell

As part of Celebrating 90 Years of NC State Education, we asked you to share your stories of why you chose education and why you love the NC State College of Education. Below is one of the many stories we received demonstrating how we’re leading the way in education in North Carolina and beyond.

Name: Hannah Powell
Graduation Year: 2013
Program: Middle Grades Math & Science Education
Career Role & Responsibilities: I’m an 8th Grade Math teacher at William Ellis Middle School in Davie County (N.C.). I collaborate with the Exceptional Children Teacher. I assist with the girls’ soccer team. I am on the SIT team.

Why did you enter the field of education?
I loved middle school (crazy, I know!) growing up. I have always loved math and helping people understand it – I wanted others to see why I loved it so much. I never understood how someone couldn’t like math. I feel like middle school can be such an awesome experience with the right support, so I wanted to be that support. I wanted students to enjoy their middle school experience as much as I enjoyed mine!

Why did you choose to earn your degree from the NC State College of Education?
My dad went to NC State so I’ve always been a die-hard fan. They have such strong and respected math/science programs. It was a no-brainer!
