#WhyIChoseEducation: Megan Sherrell

As part of Celebrating 90 Years of NC State Education, we asked you to share your stories of why you chose education and why you love the NC State College of Education. Below is one of the many stories we received demonstrating how we’re leading the way in education in North Carolina and beyond.

Name: Megan Sherrell
Graduation Year:
 2013
Program: Master of Arts in Teaching, English as a Second Language
Career Role & Responsibilities:  I teach ESL at the same school where I student taught during my internship. I teach at E K Powe in Durham, N.C.

Why did you enter the field of education?
Education is my calling. I have wanted to be a teacher since I started school in kindergarten and it has always been my dream. I love working with younger students and sharing with them my love of learning, reading, and trying new things. I love that lightbulb moment, that “aha!” Kids amaze and amuse me every day. I wanted to marry my love of linguistics with education and make learning and school accessible for all my students.

Why did you choose to earn your degree from the NC State College of Education?
NC State had one of the only ESL programs in the area, and I knew that was where my passion was. It made my dream come true so I can help others with theirs.
